Tour salinas Lagoon

Pick up from hotel at 7am. Approximately 4 hours from Arequipa, the laguna is located behind the Pichu Pichu, and is home to the National Reserve of Salinas and Aguas Blancas.

It was declared in 1979 that the zone has favourable conditions for the development of vicuña populations, as well as taruca, pariguanas and forests queñuas, all within a radius of 366,936 hectares.

The basin area, regulated by the dams of the El Fraile and Agua Blanca, ensures the supply of drinking water for the city of Arequipa and delivers irrigation water to the area´s agricultural department.

The reserve is home to relics of Andean forests and grasslands (altoandinas) possessing species such as Yareta (Azorella), Queñual (Polylepis) and Kcapo (Parastrephia lepidophylla), used by the local population as a fuel and for livestock grazing. This area is also inhabited by various species of mammals and birds. Among the most important are the taruca (Hippocamelus antisensis), fox (culpeo) and the vicuña (Vicugna vicugna). Among those considered to be endangered are the Flemish jamesi (Phoenicopterus jamesi), the Flemish parihuana (Chilean flamingo) and the guanaco. The Laguna de Salinas is a good example of the very important salination process in southern Peru; it maintains important bird populations, and provides natural resources needed for the development activities of several economically important regions.
